Totara LMS has the option to allow themes to be set at the course and category levels, however, it is not really possible to have a different personalised front page for each user. Totara also has the capability to enable user themes but it is not easy for site administrators to enable them on a bulk basis and, unless disabled, the user can go to their profile and change the theme to something else.
Organisations that are using a learning management system to deliver online training to multiple clients can now offer their clients a uniquely branded learning environment without having to have a separate LMS instance for each client.
Brightcookie has developed a plugin for Totara LMS, which allows organisations to develop a unique user interface for each of their clients. This means that organisations can offer their client a system branded with their own visual identity, without having to build them their own separate LMS.
How does it work?
The plugin takes advantage of the organisational hierarchical structure of Totara to allow different organisations to exist within the same system.
Each organisation is allocated its own organisational framework and an organisational hierarchy is developed within that framework. Each user belonging to that organisation is linked to part of the organisational hierarchy through information in their profile.
A theme is developed for each organisation and is mapped to the organisation framework through the interface of the plugin.
During the login process, the plugin identifies the user’s organisation and once logged in, displays the relevant theme and branding from the front page right through to course level.
With the use of the Essential theme, information on the front page of the site can be tailored specifically to each organisation by the use of sliders and marketing spots. The learner sees their organisation branding and content that is relevant for their organisation, team and individual needs.
The multi-theme plugin was originally developed for a client delivering training to multiple organisations operating within the same industry area. Understandably, they didn’t want each organisation to know that they were also delivering training to their competitors. They wanted a learning environment that was uniquely branded for each of their clients without having to use multiple instances of Totara.
With the use of Totara’s organisation and position hierarchies as well as the report builder functionality, the client can create reports and make them available to key people within each organisation allowing them to view data on users only within their organisation.
The efficiencies that are gained from operating on one installation are huge. Kien Vu, Brightcookie’s Technical Operations Manager, says “By hosting multiple companies on the same LMS installation you save many ongoing costs. On your side, you will only have to maintain one installation of Totara, which will reduce licensing and maintenance costs.”
The multi-theme plugin is simple to use with the client having the control to map themes with organisations. Combine it with other Totara functions such as the hierarchies, report builder and learning programs and you have a system that can cater for multiple organisations within the one instance of Totara.
